Who May Perform a Marriage Ceremony

Once a marriage license has been issued it must be solemnized, this is a process by which the marriage becomes legal. The person that solemnizes a marriage is known as an Officiant. All persons that wish to solemnize marriages must be registered with the Ohio Secretary of State.

The following is a list of who may solemnize marriages.

  • A duly ordained or licensed minister of any religious society or congregation
  • A Judge of a county court, municipal court, or probate court
  • The current Mayor of a municipal corporation anywhere within Ohio
  • The Superintendent of Ohio deaf and blind education services.
  • Any religious society in conformity with the rules of its church

It is the responsibility of the applicants to make arrangements for someone to solemnize the marriage, and to ensure that they are registered with the Ohio Secretary of State.  Applicants can check the list of registered officiants at the Secretary of State website, to see if their officiant is registered.
