VETERANS SERVICES
Recording your DD-214
In Ohio, Veterans can file their military discharge papers (DD-214) with the county Recorder's Office for safekeeping. If their original is ever lost or damaged, certified copies can be obtained from our office free of charge.
To record you DD-214, please bring your Original or Certified Copy of your discharge papers along with a government issued photo ID to the Recorder's Office.
Please note, discharge papers that are filed in our office are NOT considered public record and can only be obtained by the veteran or an authorized individual with proof of identification.
- To obtain a certified copy of YOUR OWN DD-214, which has been previously recorded in the Miami County Recorder's Office, you will need to present a government issued photo ID.
- To obtain a copy of ANOTHER PERSON’S DD-214, which has been previously recorded in the Recorder's Office, you will need proof that you are an “authorized party” (See ORC§317.24).
- A recorded discharge document is not a public record for a period of seventy-five (75) years after the date of recording.
Veteran ID Card
If you have your Honorable Discharge papers on record in our office, you can get a Veteran ID Card at NO CHARGE. The Veteran ID card can be used:
- To receive discounts at participating retailers and restaurants around the state
- To obtain free, certified copies of your DD-214 from our Recorder's Office
The ID cannot be used to obtained VA benefits.
